Location and offerings

In Bangkok, there are plenty of hotels in all categories. Most business travelers prefer to stay in the center, near the city's business district. Some choose instead to stay in quieter areas, slightly outside the city center.

Families sometimes appreciate a central location but more often prefer hotels where it is relatively peaceful and quiet. It is nice to have an outdoor pool where children can play and be refreshed.

Couples tend to prefer the center, or a hotel near the scenic Chao Phraya River. They tend to especially appreciate a hotel with a relaxing atmosphere, and lovely rooms or suites.

In Bangkok you can also find many budget hotels. Some have good locations in the most popular neighborhoods, while others are a bit more secluded.

The finest luxury hotels are located almost exclusively in the inner parts of the city center. Several of them have a fantastic view of the city or Chaophraya River.

When you book a hotel it is always wise to first decide what you want to do during your stay, and then select the area and price range based on your personal needs and preferences.

Attractions and sights

Bangkok is a lively city and there is always something new to discover. In addition to attractions like the Suan Chitralada Palace (Grand Palace) and the famous marble Buddhist temple Wat Benchamabophit. Bangkok also has several popular museums like the National Gallery, the Royal Boat Museum and Natural History Museum.

Restaurants, shopping and nightlife

Many people visit Bangkok to experience the special atmosphere, shop and try the different varieties of Thai food. There are a wide variety of restaurants and even the sidewalks are crowded with food carts and portable kitchens. Thais have a penchant for spicy food and the inexperienced should exercise some caution.

The city is known for its many shops where you can buy branded and knock off goods at really good prices. At Sukhumvit Road and Siam Square are many small shops. Also nearby are major shopping malls and department stores, such as Suam Paragon, Patpong Night Bazaar and Central World Plaza.

In the center of town there is a wide selection of bars and discos, where you can enjoy yourself well into the wee hours of the morning.

There are also several good theaters as Siam Niramit and Chalermkrung Royal Theatre. Many tourists also like to visit some of the city's upscale cinemas.

Trade shows and events

Bangkok is a vibrant city and there are often various celebrations and events. Anniversaries related to the royal family and the royal birthdays are celebrated, and there are also days that are of great religious significance. In addition, every year a variety of festivals are organized, of which perhaps the best known is the Songkran water festival.

During large events some of the best hotels can be booked up, although there is a very large range of alternatives. Please make an inquiry about the availability of hotels you might like to stay at before you book the trip so you can make the most of your time there.

Travel to and in the city

Most tourists arrive in Bangkok by plane or train. The old airport Don Mueang is now used only for domestic flights. The new Suvarnabhumi International Airport is just east of the city. From this airport you can reach the city easily by shuttle, taxi or train. Inside central Bangkok, the easiest and most convenient way to travel by the BTS Skytrain system. These are lines that extend over the entire city and the carriages are equipped with good air conditioning.

There are also many bus routes, but they often have older vehicles without air conditioning. You can find plenty of typical tuk-tuk's in the city, although they largely have been replaced with modern taxis. Taxis should have a sign on the roof that says Taxi Meter, which means that the car has a meter.

Driving in the city is not recommended, because the traffic is at the least very chaotic. A better option is to hire a driver for an entire day, or to rely on public transport.

In the city there are also boat lines, with which you can use to get around via the canal system and the Chao Phraya River.

Weather and climate

Thailand has a tropical climate influenced by the monsoons and its three seasons differ considerably. Spring is hot with high humidity, while the summer and fall together are more of a rainy season. The climate during this period is relaxed because the heat and humidity in the air. In late autumn and winter the weather is cooler, drier with a temperature variation generally between 23-32 degrees. If you visit Bangkok during the hot period a hotel with a swimming pool is highly recommended.

Price structure

Bangkok is a relatively inexpensive city to stay in, but as a tourist you should be vigilant so you are not be deceived by vendors. Many will try to sell you things at inflated prices. Many tuk-tuk drivers cooperate with shops and receive commissions or compensation for every customer they attract to the shop.

City pass
